In a preseason match that saw Chelsea and Inter Milan battle to a 1-1 draw, the game was a reflection of Chelsea’s preparations for the upcoming season. With Enzo Fernández wearing the captain’s armband and Enzo Maresca orchestrating from the sidelines, it was evident that the team was keen to impose their playing style from the kickoff. Despite the visitors not showing much interest in possession battles, the Blues were determined to control the game.

Counterattacks from Inter Milan were a significant issue, exploiting Chelsea’s high lines. The combined speed and strength of Joaquín Correa and Marcus Thuram upfront kept the Blues on their toes. Nevertheless, it was Chelsea who came closest to scoring. A few successful endeavours saw Marc Guiu’s shot saved by goalkeeper Yann Sommer in the opposition’s box.

As the preseason unfolded, Chelsea continued to dominate ball possession, though Inter Milan showcased real teeth in their attack. Midfield control was elusive, with spaces left open across the pitch. With Inter making the ground game challenging, Chelsea turned to crosses. Gusto delivered some good ones from the right flank, and Marc Cucurella nearly found the net with one of them.

After the water break, Enzo Maresca gave numerous instructions to Enzo Fernández, who was busy captain. However, Inter Milan soon opened the score. A series of missed tackles in midfield and defence, following a quick transition from the centre of the pitch, led to Thuram finishing Correa’s assist for their first goal of the game.

The Blues were eager for a quick response. Guiu worked hard to get ahead of crosses and corner kicks, and even came close to stealing the ball from Sommer during a back pass. He also nearly converted a Cucurella stray shot into the back of the net, forcing the opposition’s shot-stopper into a superb parry.

Despite Noni Madueke adding attacking forays, Inter Milan held firm in defence, preventing Chelsea from finding the tying goal in the first half. The second half began with Chelsea dominating possession once again, but Inter Milan looked more dangerous in front of the goal. Seven minutes in, Federico Dimarco nearly scored a second goal, but Robert Sánchez made a crucial save between Chelsea’s posts.

A marvellous response was nearly achieved when Gusto approached the edge of the box and crossed the ball. It soared high, and Christopher Nkunku attempted a bicycle kick, but Sommer’s reflexes were up to the challenge.

Palmer’s contribution saw Chelsea’s play improve significantly compared to the first half. Good chances were created, but something was always missing to get past Sommer and into the net.

Finally, Lesley Ugochukwu scored the opener with a poacher effort from a free kick close to the box. At least Chelsea did not leave the Bridge empty handed.

Conclusion

This preseason match between Chelsea and Inter Milan showcased both teams’ strengths and areas for improvement. Chelsea showed their ability to control possession and create chances but struggled with finishing and defensive issues. Inter Milan capitalized on Chelsea’s high lines and defensive lapses, making for a competitive and insightful game. The Blues have plenty to work on as they prepare for the upcoming season, but this game provided valuable lessons and glimpses of promising talent.
